Fun Twin Facts

Identical twins have almost identical brainwave patterns. This can cause one twin to feel pain when the other is injured, or give twins the ability to "read each other's mind." Twins can develop similar physical abnormalities such as each twin missing the same permanent tooth. (Weird, huh?)
 

Of 3,000 families polled, 33% said they chose to give each multiple a totally unique name rather than those that sound similar. (We had lots of people suggest names to us that were very similar.  The funniest suggestion we got was Huck and Buck, if they had been boys!)

According to one source, there are approximately 125 million multiples living today.

Many twins develop and speak a language that only they understand. (Travis and I have experienced this with identical twin girls that I used to babysit on occasion.  I have to admit I thought it was super strange.  They could totally understand each other, but we couldn’t understand a word they were saying!)

Identical twins share the same DNA, but will have their own fingerprints!

About 25% of identical twins are called mirror image twins. For example if one has a mole under her right eye, the other will have it under her left eye. (This makes me laugh because early on in my pregnancy my sister-in-law told me that she had a dream that the twins were born with birthmarks on their face, like the one I have.  I spent many years being told by other kids that I had dog poop on my face; let’s just hope her dream isn’t right!)

The average or recommended weight gain for average sized mothers of twins is between 35-45 lbs. (Opps, I’ve actually gained exactly 45 lbs. and still have 17 days to go.)

22% of Twins are left handed (Both my father and Travis’ father are left handed- we’ll see what the girls decide to do.)

Did you know that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are actually fraternal twins?!! (Crazy, right?  They look identical to me!)

Newborn twins, on average will go through 25-30 diapers a day.  (Ugh, how many wipes will we need?)
